Though the precise origins of red velvet cake are unclear, the most common theory is that it originated somewhere in America’s Deep South during the turn of the century.

Characterised by its deep red hue, the cake is currently experiencing a new wave of popularity, with its chocolatey flavour, dynamic colour and fluffy white cream cheese icing making it the star of many a cake cabinet.
